3rd Eye Studios nabs $1M investment for VR development

The Finnish game development house 3rd Eye Studios has closed a round of funding that now leaves it with an additional $1 million investment at its disposal.

The developer plans to use the hefty sum to further develop 3rd Eye Core, its PC and mobile-focused VR development toolset.

AR specialist Leap Motion opens new design research studio

Virtual and augmented reality specialist Leap Motion has cut the ribbon on a new design research studio in London.

The company is best known for its hand tracking software and hardware, and has pioneered new tech like the Interaction Engine, which attempts to make virtual interactions function in a way that “satisfies human expectations”

343 Industries created a Halo VR experience for Windows Mixed Reality

Microsoft’s flagship Halo series is making its VR debut, only not as a full-fledged game. Instead, 343 industries has developed a short VR experience for Microsoft’s upcoming line of Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

The app itself is called Halo Recruit and drops players into a lightly explorable environment populated with characters, weapons, and vehicles from the Halo games.

Social VR application AltspaceVR is acquired by Microsoft

Microsoft announced today during a press conference held in San Fransisco that it has acquired the social VR application AltspaceVR, which had shut down suddenly back in July due to lack of funding.

After being shut down, the free social VR networking platform had told members that they were in talks with a third party (revealed to be Microsoft) in order to save the community.

Steam VR developers are now able to use Microsoft Mixed Reality platforms

During a press event held in San Francisco, Microsoft announced that their Mixed Reality platform will now be open to SteamVR developers. This means that developers have access to the previews program, which is intended to help them test their games.

This new partnership means that Windows users will be able to download and play the same VR titles from Steam that are available on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Fallout 4 VR to be bundled with the HTC Vive

HTC has announced today that the HTC Vive is set to be bundled with the upcoming Fallout 4 VR, set to launch December 12th of this year. This follows after a $200 price cut for the Vive back in August, reducing the cost from $800 to $600 for the headset.

Fallout 4 VR will retail for $60, and those who purchase the HTC Vive bundle will receive a redemption code to download the game for free when it becomes available.

Sony is releasing an updated PSVR headset later this month

Sony is preparing to release a new version of its PlayStation VR headset, which has sold over 1 million units since launching last October.

The updated headset will pack a few new features like a slimmer, streamlined connection cable, and a tweaked design that enables stereo headphone cables to be integrated directly with the device.

ZED Mini emulates AR when attached to VR headsets

The ZED Mini is a small, stereo depth mapping camera which is designed to attach to VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Created by Stereolabs Inc., the camera provides real-time depth and environment mapping.

The mount allows VR headsets to emulate future capabilities of more powerful commercial AR headsets like the HoloLens, which currently have a limited field of view when compared to VR.

Federal grant allows for University of Maryland to plan VR/AR center

The University of Maryland College park received a $50,000 federal grant that will allow the university to begin development of the Mixed/Augmented/Virtual Reality Innovation Center (MAVRIC).

The award comes from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Authority’s i6 challenge competition, where 42 organizations from 28 states received over $17 million to iterate proof-of-concept and commercialization programs.
